Practical work on creating an artificial glacier is under way in the village of Sumbula, Batken Region, on the territory of the Leylek forestry enterprise. The work is carried out under the “Artificial Glacier – Reservoir – Farmer” project implemented by the Kyrgyz Association of Forest and Land Users (KAFLU) with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The initiative is a practical follow-up to the Guidance Document developed on creating artificial glaciers and introducing the “Artificial Glacier – Reservoir – Farmer” system.

The document proposes an integrated approach to accumulating, storing and sustainably using water resources, taking into account the climatic and geographical features of Kyrgyzstan's mountain regions.

The technology involves accumulating water in winter in the form of an artificial glacier and using the meltwater in spring and summer for agricultural needs.

The pilot in Sumbula will make it possible to assess the proposed technical solutions in practice, gain experience and develop recommendations for further improving and scaling up the technology in other regions of the Kyrgyz Republic.

From developing a guidance document to applying it in practice. From an innovative idea to a real solution for sustainable water management!
