Today, as part of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists, the interregional Summer School for Young Pastoralists has launched in Kyrgyzstan!
The official opening of the interregional Summer School, which brought together more than 50 young leaders of pastoral communities from Asia, Africa, and various regions of Kyrgyzstan, took place today.
Participants from Kyrgyzstan, India, Indonesia, Germany, Kenya, Somalia, Sri Lanka, and other countries will spend a week exchanging experiences, developing leadership skills, and learning modern methods of sustainable pasture management.
The school runs from July 13 to 18 in Bishkek, Suusamyr, Issyk-Kul, and Son-Kul, with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Land Coalition, and the Kyrgyz Association of Forest and Land Users.
Young representatives of community natural resource management groups from the pilot areas of the CS FOR project, funded by the Green Climate Fund through FAO, are also taking part. They currently work as volunteers in the project, contributing to pasture restoration, monitoring, and the sustainable management of natural resources.
During the field sessions starting tomorrow, participants will become acquainted with the traditional knowledge of Kyrgyz herders, learn methods for monitoring the condition of pastures, and explore modern digital solutions such as GPS monitoring and Open Foris technologies.
Pastures play an important role in conserving biodiversity, ensuring food security, increasing resilience to climate change, and supporting rural communities.
